Grey/Green Afghan

I was at work one day merchandising gift cards for one of my client companies. I just happened to be in one of the Michael’s store. I figured I could browse around and just see if there was anything of interest. I wasn’t going to buy anything. They had a clearance sale on yarn cakes. Never used a cake of yarn, I’ve always just bought skeins or the small balls of cotton yarns.

These cakes were almost half off. Regular price $9.99 and it was marked down to $4.99. Well, I grabbed 2 cakes and figured I’d give them a try. I wasn’t really too thrilled with the color selection but for a clearance item, I could make up something quick for one of those unexpected gifts I might need to give.

I had never worked with cake yarn and wasn’t quite sure how to use it. I googled working with cake yarn and was instructed to pull from the outside and then pull from the inside when you wanted to change colors. Ok, so it’s like 2 skeins of yarn in one.

I decided to do a variation of the Tunisian Entrelac (afghan stitch) and 2 hours later, this is what I came up with:

This was working up fast. I’m still not finished with this project but the top photo is where I am now. It’s the middle of July (in Florida) and this stuff is wool. I hope to be able to pick it up and finish sometime in October or November, when it cools off just a little.

I did run out of yarn. I went back to Michael’s to get some more. These were a clearance items so I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to find any more. I got lucky. Seems no one wanted this stuff….lol. I bought 4 more cakes. I should have enough to finish and do a border.

It's been over a year and I'm still not finished with this project.  It's beautiful and not much left, but working with wool is a booger.  This is still a WIP.
